How to start a New Business Plan: First Set-up Steps

Here are a few first tasks to begin to adapting The Shell (your business plan template) to become your master business plan file.

  1. Title Page. Replace <Your Business Name> with your actual business name (be sure to remove the <>)
  2. Title Page. Click on the RiskBuster logo and remove it. If you have a logo for your business you can copy it to this location.
  3. Title Page. Open the footer (double-click) and replace <Your Business Name> with your actual business name (be sure to remove the <>)
  4. Remove the “insert your logo here” and replace it with a small version of your logo, if you have one.
  5. Control-End or scroll to the end of the document  or use the Table of Contents to navigate to Section 6: Appendices.   Go through the Appendices (yes, all 24) and delete the ones you are certain you won’t need.

Warning: When working with the Table of Contents any changes you make editing the sections including editing titles in the Table of Contents will not update in the actual document – you must work from the document and then update the Table of Contents

Tip: For quick access to the Appendices Refer to Steps 66 to 89 (pg 224-259 of the RiskBuster Book).

  • Once you’ve deleted all of the unwanted Appendices Headers within the document, go to the Table of Contents – right-click anywhere on the Table of Contents and update the table by selecting “Update Field” and choosing  ” Update Entire Field”

You are now ready to start writing the elements of your business plan, beginning with RoadMap Step 31—Business Plan Element 2.1 The Business.
